Zuri Dispatch 01.18.22 // Zuri Author Spotlight 📚

Posted by Sierra Rostal on

Our Zuri community is filled with so many incredible, talented writers that we realized that in addition to compiling this great work on our Reading List, we should share a bit about the women and the work that they've created!

We've got a wonderful selection of works from many of our Zuri community authors available in our Bookshop, as well as some of our favorite newsletter picks! We hope you'll enjoy it, and of course, if there's a book that you'd like us to consider including, you can always drop us a line at heyzuri@shopzuri.com.

As she writes: "Cipota Under the Moon is a testament to the men, women, and children who bet on life at all costs and now make their home in another language, in another place, which they, by their presence, change every day."

WHAT WE'RE READING // Hunger by Lan Samantha Chang

Though published over twenty years ago, this novella and collection of short stories about the Chinese immigrant experience in New York City remains discouragingly fresh. From parents deferring their ambitions onto the next generation, to the dissonance of language and communication between the worlds within the home and outside, to the constant longing for an unknown belonging, the immigrant experience is varied in the particularities but universal in the feelings of loss, displacement and hope.
CHECK IT OUT // Essence Magazine's Book List for 2022
The latest release by a member of the Zuri family, Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa, was proudly included in Essence Magazine's release of their "56 New Books We Can’t Wait To Read In 2022" recommendation list! In addition to this reading list, which we can't wait to dive into, we'll just casually mention here that Lisa Bonet's split from Jason Momoa is featured on the homepage, for those of you who have a penchant for celebrity gossip.
WHO WE'RE LISTENING TO // Black Hibiscus
New artist Black Hibiscus is a Nigerian musician, combining indie and soul influence to make music with some bounce for the heart. Drawing inspiration from legends such as Nick Hakim, Blood Orange, and Bakar, we hope you'll enjoy his fresh sound as
 much as we do!
